On the 26th, Mayor Yuk Dong-han of Chuncheon revealed this strategy to overcome regional extinction at the 'Cultural Policy Forum - 2024 Regional Innovation' held at the Korea Press Center in Seoul, under the theme 'Overcoming Regional Extinction and the Value of Enterprises.' Mayor Yuk, who attended the forum, gave a presentation titled 'Chuncheon's Secret Strategy in the Era of Regional Extinction.'
Chuncheon's secret strategy consists of four main pillars: ▲Talent Development ▲Advanced Industries ▲Living Conditions ▲Urban Infrastructure.
First, through Chuncheon-type educational development zones, including university-specific specialized programs in collaboration with universities in Chuncheon and the establishment of a 15-minute learning life zone, the plan is to realize the best educational city, nurture talent, and retain talent within the region.
Additionally, there is a strategy to further advance Chuncheon's bio-industry, which has been strategically nurtured for a long time. Chuncheon has already been selected as a national advanced strategic bio-industry specialized complex and is rising as a high-tech knowledge industry city.

Along with this, from 2024 to 2033, with a project cost of 936.4 billion KRW, the Chuncheon Corporate Innovation Park is being promoted through a private-led complex development method. Efforts are also underway to improve living conditions by attracting mega-events, establishing the World Taekwondo Federation headquarters, developing the Hosu Provincial Garden, and strengthening stay-type lodging tourism.
Moreover, urban infrastructure is being built in various fields, including the East-West High-Speed Railway, GTX-B extension to Chuncheon, the 2nd Gyeongchun National Road, Seomyeon Bridge, Soyang Bridge, and the implementation of a quasi-public bus system.
In the subsequent discussion, Kwon Hyuk-joo, President of the Korea Institute of Public Administration, served as the moderator, with participants including Mayor Yuk Dong-han of Chuncheon, Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun of Hwaseong, Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin, and Kim Kwang-yong, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
During the discussion, participants showed great interest in Chuncheon's secret strategy to overcome regional extinction. In particular, Kim Kwang-yong, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated, "It is necessary to have various policies that accurately grasp the characteristics of the region, like Chuncheon, and tailor them accordingly."
Mayor Yuk Dong-han of Chuncheon emphasized, "What is important to overcome regional extinction is people and talent, so we will implement Chuncheon-type education based on the education system and research and development," adding, "The leadership of local government heads is also a crucial part. It is necessary to fully utilize the insight, knowledge, and human networking of the heads to attract many opportunities, resources, and people to the region."
