Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 26th that it had obtained the 2024 Smart City certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 25th.

In the large city category, Goyang City was the sole selection, and along with Uijeongbu City in the small and medium city category, it became the first in northern Gyeonggi to receive Smart City certification.

In three areas?innovation, governance and systems, and service technology and infrastructure?Goyang Special City received a high score of over 1,400 points out of 2,000 across 53 detailed evaluation indicators, reaffirming the status of Goyang as a Smart City.

The city applied for the 2024 Smart City certification contest in October and underwent an on-site verification in November. In particular, it received high marks in terms of technological convergence and fusion through the operation of an AI-based integrated video surveillance system for real-time anomaly detection. The citizen-led social problem-solving based on living labs and the creation of a self-sustaining data industry ecosystem utilizing big data were recognized as major achievements.

Based on this certification, the city plans to establish new paradigms of smart technology and infrastructure in connection with the 2023 hub-type smart city development project selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in May last year. This is expected to be an important driving force for advancing as a leading city in the smart sector through governance operation in a living lab style for discovering and solving urban problems and regional specialized innovation.

A Goyang Special City official stated, “This certification proves that Goyang Special City has secured a leading position for the development of smart cities,” and added, “We will continue our efforts for innovative smart city development to provide citizens with a better daily life and future.”
