National Pukyong University, Integrated or Independent? Glocal '2 Wins 3 Attempts' Full-Scale Challenge

The Top Priority is 'Communication'... Glocal Communication Council in Operation

National Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-hoon) has launched the Glocal Communication Council and has begun full-scale preparations for next year's Glocal University 30 project application.

On the afternoon of the 25th, Pukyong National University held a Glocal Communication Council member appointment ceremony and its first meeting in the second-floor conference room of the university headquarters. From that day forward until the submission of the official designation plan for next year's Glocal University 30 project, the council will gather opinions from members and discuss university innovation plans related to the project.

The Glocal University 30 project is a large-scale government financial support initiative that selects 30 universities located outside the metropolitan area to promote mutual development between regions and regional universities, providing 100 billion KRW over five years. Twenty universities were selected last year and this year, including integrated or consortium forms, and an additional ten universities are expected to be selected by 2026.

Pukyong National University applied for this project alone last year and in integration with Korea Maritime and Ocean University this year but faced rejection. During this year's application process, students protested, claiming their opinions were not sufficiently gathered.

Accordingly, Pukyong National University plans to prioritize 'communication' from the preparation stage of the project application. President Bae Sang-hoon approved the establishment of the council as his first official agenda item after taking office this month. The council consists of 42 members, including 10 students, 11 professors, 10 staff members, as well as teaching assistants, university headquarters officials, and the practical support team, maximizing the effectiveness of opinion gathering.

Additionally, before launching this council, the university plans to actively reflect the results of a survey conducted from last month to this month targeting all members in the project plan. A total of 1,631 people participated in the survey, with a student participation rate reaching 67%, indicating high student interest.

According to the survey results, 96% of respondents had heard of the Glocal University 30 project, and 74% said they were familiar with its contents. Positive responses that the project would help university development reached 83%.

The opinion suggestion survey questions included various views such as support or opposition to integration or consortium with Pusan National University or Korea Maritime and Ocean University, as well as suggestions for solo applications and partnerships with overseas universities. Opinions on strengthening cooperation with Busan City, utilizing campus locations, and collaboration with the region were also expressed, along with ideas on leveraging the university’s strengths, internationalization, and student support.

Starting with the operation of the Future Strategy Committee in August, Pukyong National University plans to engage in comprehensive communication and innovation for project promotion, including operating the Glocal Administration TFT in September, fully activating the Glocal Communication Council, and preparing to operate the Glocal External Communication Promotion Team for cooperation with external organizations.

President Bae Sang-hoon stated, “Since the Glocal University 30 project requires bold innovation beyond the existing framework of university operations, it is essential to build consensus and agreement among members. We will prioritize communication, harmony, and cooperation to do our best so that our university can leap forward as a global university together with the region.”
