President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that on his first day in office, he would impose a 25% tariff on all products imported from neighboring countries Mexico and Canada. Analysts suggest that the trilateral economic alliance connecting the United States, Mexico, and Canada faces an existential crisis under the Trump administration's second term.
On the 25th (local time), Trump posted on the social networking service Truth Social, stating, "One of the first executive orders on January 20th (next year) will be to sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States from Mexico and Canada." He emphasized that these tariffs would remain in place until the two countries properly control drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, and illegal immigrants crossing the border.
Trump also announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on China, on top of existing tariffs, until the issue of fentanyl entering the United States through Mexico and other routes is resolved.
Trump said, "We have talked a lot about the massive influx of drugs, especially fentanyl, coming into the United States from China, but it has been of no use," adding, "Chinese officials said that drug traffickers would face the death penalty if caught, but unfortunately, they have not enforced this."
