Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) has been designated as a '2024 Women-Friendly City' by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
A Women-Friendly City is a city that operates policies where women and men participate equally in local policy processes, and where women's empowerment, care, and safety are realized. The district has been steadily promoting projects focusing on five major goals: establishing a foundation for gender equality promotion, expanding women's economic and social participation, enhancing community safety, creating a family-friendly environment, and strengthening women's capacity for community activities.

Starting with the 'Ordinance on the Creation of Women-Friendly Cities' enacted in November 2020, the district supports safety equipment such as safety kits, home security closed-circuit television (CCTV), and intrusion detection devices to enhance community safety, and installs safety facilities including crime prevention CCTV, emergency bells, security lights, and basic address plates.
Safety patrols are also strengthened through the operation of Safe Return Scouts, Safety Security Guards, and Citizen Surveillance Teams against illegal filming, and a Women's Safety Council has been formed and is operating to comprehensively manage women's safety projects.
Additionally, aiming to expand women's economic and social participation, a Women's Job Council has been established to share information and collaborate among institutions in the fields of employment and job creation.
In 2022 and this year, the district formed and operated a Women-Friendly City Resident Participation Group to strengthen women's capacity for community activities. The Gender Equality Week commemorative event held last September was a significant contribution to the spread of gender equality culture and the connection of women's activities through cooperation between various women's organizations and the public and private sectors from planning to execution.
Mayor Lee Soon-hee said, "This designation as a Women-Friendly City is the result of efforts to create a social environment where women and men equally enjoy opportunities and respect each other," adding, "We will continue to strive to make the city safe and happy for all residents, including socially vulnerable groups."
