About 150 stakeholders from schools, social environmental education institutions, and local governments will attend the workshop.
The Office of Education is promoting practice-centered ecological environmental education tailored to regional characteristics. Collaborating with the provincial government, it directly supports schools through the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Environmental Education Promotion Council and implements community-centered environmental education.
This year, 27 schools have been designated as 'Carbon Neutral Ecological Environmental Model Schools' as environmental education hubs by each education support office, and efforts to spread carbon-neutral ecological education are underway through △regional environmental education councils △curriculum consulting △lesson sharing.
At this workshop, under the theme 'Towards Better Environmental Education,' presentations will be given on △the current status and challenges of environmental education for future generations (Kim In-ho, Director of the Environmental Education Innovation Institute) △achievements of Gyeonggi-do environmental education projects and plans for 2025 (Jang Kyung-oh, Team Leader of Gyeonggi-do Environmental Education Team) △achievements and challenges of school-society linkage (Kim Dong-hyun, Director of Gwangmyeong City Environmental Education Center) △current status and challenges of school-society linkage (Sim Jeong-eun, teacher at Hyangsan Elementary School).
The workshop will continue with guidance on the national policy direction for 2050 carbon neutrality, Gyeonggi-do’s social environmental education direction and support plans, and proposals on how local governments and schools should support and cooperate in school environmental education.
Following this, discussions will be held among representatives from the Office of Education, local governments, and schools, including subgroup discussions on 2025 policy implementation and ideas, as well as joint discussions on a sustainable future.
Participants will explore experiential and practice-centered environmental education methods utilizing local resources, aligned with the policy direction to enhance ecological sensitivity starting from the regions and lives where they live.
The Office of Education plans to seek mid- to long-term development plans for Gyeonggi-type carbon-neutral education through policy research in 2024 and to reflect various opinions gathered from this workshop in establishing next year’s Gyeonggi environmental education policy direction.
Hyun Gye-myeong, Director of the Convergence Education Policy Division at the Office of Education, said, “We are considering environmental education policies centered on the community,” adding, “This is an opportunity to cooperate with the community regarding environmental education utilizing local resources through collaboration between the Office of Education and education support offices.”
