Management Paradigm Shift Including Expansion of Social Contribution and Eco-Friendly Energy Businesses, Sharing and Volunteering
Contributing to National Carbon Neutrality Goals, Enhancing National Status, Practicing Global CEO Mission
Kim Dong-seop, President of Korea National Oil Corporation, received the ‘2024 Second Half Korea Volunteer Award’ from the Korea UN Volunteers on the 19th.
Established in 1971, the Korea UN Volunteers is a social service organization that practices the core values of the UN such as peace, development, and human rights, and carries out various social public interest projects. Every year, it awards the Korea Volunteer Award to volunteers who are devotedly practicing sharing and volunteering in our society.
Since assuming the presidency of the Korea National Oil Corporation in June 2021, Kim Dong-seop selected the corporate slogan as ‘Better Energy for Us&Earth’ and has been leading the shift in the company’s management paradigm to emphasize social contribution and eco-friendliness through ESG management.
Accordingly, the Korea National Oil Corporation has reorganized and established its social contribution promotion strategy centered on four core areas (①Energy Welfare ②Eco&Society ③Dream Future ④With Global Family) and is carrying out various activities focused on sharing and volunteering that can be practiced in the energy sector as a representative energy public enterprise of Korea.
These include donating high-efficiency cooling and heating products to vulnerable groups in local governments and replacing high-efficiency LED lights to reduce energy consumption and ease electricity bill burdens, as well as the ‘KNOC Dream Sunlight Energy’ project, which practices energy sharing in local communities by utilizing profits from selling surplus solar power.
President Kim Dong-seop also shows great interest in blood donation that saves lives and encourages Korea National Oil Corporation employees to actively participate in blood donation. The company designated the week of its founding anniversary (March 3) in 2024 as a local coexistence week, during which many headquarters and branch employees voluntarily participated in blood donation and received a commendation from the Mayor of Ulsan on ‘Blood Donation Day’ in June.
In addition, the company is expanding care and sharing projects for socially marginalized groups, such as the ‘Dream Maker Program’ for career and vocational training for disabled students, operating the first disabled sports team among public institutions in the Ulsan region, and support and education programs for the stable social settlement of multicultural families. It is also actively conducting eco-friendly sharing activities through campaigns like the ‘G9 KNOC Plogging’ for creating a pleasant living environment and a circular waste resource recycling program.
Since his time as a professor at UNIST, Kim Dong-seop has contributed to the growth of Ulsan as a global model industrial city by helping apply Digital Smart Manufacturing technology using AI to local small and medium-sized enterprises’ sites. Based on his decades of experience at the world-leading major oil company Shell, he is also leading efforts to contribute to achieving the national carbon neutrality goal.
In particular, he fulfills his mission as a global oil company CEO in the energy transition era by regularly exchanging ideas and plans on clean energy businesses such as hydrogen and ammonia with CEOs of global companies like ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) and S&P Global, thereby enhancing the nation’s prestige.
In his acceptance speech, Kim Dong-seop said, “As a CEO of a global energy public enterprise, I will strive to serve the people with good results through the company’s core business of energy.” He added, “I will continue efforts to discover future eco-friendly energy businesses and actively promote them on the international stage to contribute to realizing carbon neutrality.”
