The National Police Agency announced on the 25th that the number of arrests for overseas technology leakage cases this year reached 25, the highest since the launch of the National Investigation Headquarters.
Since last year, the National Police Agency has established a specialized investigation system by assigning dedicated technologies to investigation teams according to the characteristics of local companies and industrial complexes. They have also encouraged investigators to actively conduct field activities, laying the groundwork for gathering intelligence on overseas technology leakage. As a result, 25 cases were apprehended from January to October this year, of which 10 involved the leakage of national core technologies overseas. By technology sector, display accounted for 32%, followed by semiconductors at 28%.
The police identified the salaries and living expenses received by suspects who leaked national core technologies and preemptively seized assets before prosecution, recovering approximately 4.9 billion won in six cases.
A National Police Agency official stated, “We are promoting an increase in dedicated investigative personnel to eradicate the increasingly advanced and organized crimes of overseas technology leakage. We are also reviewing the introduction of the latest investigative techniques such as undercover operations and will collaborate with related agencies to improve legislation, including establishing new regulations for punishing brokers.”
