A husband who demanded a divorce without supporting his wife's medical expenses after she was diagnosed with cancer just two months into their marriage has sparked outrage among netizens.
On the 20th (local time), Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on a Chinese man named 'Peng' who turned his back on his wife 'Wang' after she was diagnosed with cancer. According to the report, the couple married in 2022, but just two months after becoming husband and wife, Wang was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. At first, Peng cared for his wife devotedly, but soon after, he began neglecting her, using the excuse that he was "busy with work."
Wang and her family tried to contact Peng multiple times but could not reach him. She had to borrow money from various places to cover the enormous hospital bills while undergoing chemotherapy. After about half a year of treatment at the hospital, Wang eventually passed away. Subsequently, Wang's family filed a lawsuit, stating, "Peng did not fulfill his duties as a husband. He neither cared for his wife nor paid for her treatment."
During this process, it was also revealed that Peng had asked Wang for a divorce twice while she was battling cancer. Wang's father lamented, "Peng's behavior was utterly cruel," adding, "We had to seek help from the police and administrative authorities because we couldn't reach him." Peng appeared in court, paid a certain amount of compensation to Wang's family, and asked for forgiveness. The court sentenced Peng to a one-year suspended prison term.
Local netizens who learned of the story responded with comments such as, "Abandoning your spouse at their most difficult moment is inhumane," "Worse than an animal," "It's heartbreaking that Wang was betrayed by the husband she trusted and passed away," and "Such a person does not deserve to be a husband."

Meanwhile, a similar case has occurred domestically. In August, a YouTuber known as A, who has over 5,000 subscribers, posted a video titled "A wife with cancer is useless," revealing his own experience. In the video, A said, "A few months after being diagnosed with cancer, my husband told me, 'I have something to say. I've decided to get a divorce.'" He explained, "At that time, I had lost all my hair and eyebrows due to chemotherapy, and the tumor size was not shrinking, which scared me. Initially, he accompanied me to the hospital and even joined patient support cafes to gather information, but later, he only asked, 'When will you get better?'" A, who suffered from insomnia and depression, eventually went through a divorce during the treatment process and ended up alone.
