Paju City Promotes Prevention of 'Tteotdabang' Scams Involving False and Exaggerated Food Advertising Targeting Seniors

Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 22nd that it will conduct promotional activities at local senior centers until the 26th to prevent damage caused by promotional booths, known as ‘Tteotdabang,’ which falsely advertise general foods or health functional foods as cure-alls with disease treatment effects.

‘Tteotdabang’ refers to a business type that moves locations like a mobile real estate agency, repeatedly opening and closing every few months. The main tactics of ‘Tteotdabang’ involve luring victims with free gifts, filial piety tours, medical device experiences, and free performances, then deceiving them by passing off foods as medicines and forcing high-priced sales.

Consumers must always verify whether products are approved and be cautious of false information to avoid impulsive purchases. If illegal sales activities are suspected or damages occur, they should immediately report to the Consumer Counseling Center.

Paju City has organized an inspection team composed of consumer food hygiene inspectors to tour local senior centers, providing tailored education to prevent damage among the elderly and distributing related promotional materials to strongly respond to eradicating ‘Tteotdabang.’

Jang Yeon-hee, Director of the Hygiene Division, said, “Through this inspection and promotion, we expect the elderly to recognize the dangers of ‘Tteotdabang’ and become vigilant,” adding, “We plan to prevent damage by establishing continuous inspections and a thorough protection system.”
