Hanmi Semiconductor quietly commemorated the first anniversary of the passing of its founder, the late Chairman Kwak No-kwon, by presenting an animation depicting his life as a pioneer in the semiconductor equipment industry.
Born in 1938, Chairman Kwak joined Motorola Korea in 1967 and, based on 14 years of work experience there, established Hanmi Mold (now Hanmi Semiconductor) in 1980. He is credited with elevating South Korea’s semiconductor equipment technology from a barren field to a world-class level.
Chairman Kwak led the field for about 42 years until he stepped down from frontline management. As a first-generation domestic semiconductor equipment entrepreneur, he devoted his life to prioritizing customer satisfaction and providing differentiated products and services.
The Vision Placement system, developed by Chairman Kwak in 1998, incorporates over 200 patents and other core competencies of Hanmi Semiconductor, maintaining the world’s number one market share since 2004. He also developed the Dual TC Bonder, an essential process equipment for AI semiconductors’ HBM,
which laid the foundation for Hanmi Semiconductor’s rise as a global semiconductor equipment company with a market capitalization approaching approximately 8 trillion KRW.
Hanmi Semiconductor received the Export Tower award for $100 million in 2010 and $200 million in 2021. Over the past decade, exports have accounted for about 77% of sales, growing the company into one recognized for its competitiveness overseas. From 2022 to 2024, it was selected as one of the world’s top 10 semiconductor equipment companies by TechInsights, a global semiconductor research firm, alongside ASML, Lam Research, and Applied Materials.
In 2013, Chairman Kwak was honored with the Gold Tower Industrial Medal, the highest accolade for entrepreneurs, for his outstanding contributions to capital goods development.
Chairman Kwak also took the lead in practicing social responsibility by supporting medical aid, scholarship programs, and educational projects for vulnerable children.
A Hanmi Semiconductor official stated, "We will carry on the will of our founder, Chairman Kwak No-kwon, and maximize customer satisfaction through relentless effort and technological expertise," adding, "We will strive to make Hanmi Semiconductor even more successful."
