Gyeonggi Province will present the blueprint for the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone’ today, the 28th.
On this day, Gyeonggi Province announced on the 22nd that it will hold a forum at Dasan Hall in the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office under the theme ‘The Role of Gyeonggi Province in Resolving the Renewable Energy Supply Shortage’ and will unveil the special zone blueprint.
Although the global RE100 campaign, which uses 100% electricity produced from renewable energy, is underway, Gyeonggi Province is facing difficulties in fulfilling RE100 due to a shortage of renewable energy supply and high costs. To address this, it is promoting the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone.’
The Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone is one of the 13 tasks across four sectors?public, corporate, residents, and industry?proposed by Governor Kim Dong-yeon at the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Vision Declaration Ceremony’ on April 24 last year.
Instead of entrusting private businesses entirely with renewable energy power generation, the province will identify suitable sites considering resident acceptance and environmental factors and swiftly promote projects through ‘planned site selection,’ thereby concentrating large-scale renewable energy power generation facilities.
Gyeonggi Province will promote the ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone’ divided into three regions: the West Coast Belt centered around the Sihwa Lake area; the Northern Peace Economy Belt utilizing sites such as the Peace Nuri Park parking lot and the northern campus of the Gyeonggi Fire Service Academy in Yeoncheon; and the Southeastern region, which uses shared spaces like bicycle paths to expand renewable energy within water source protection zones.
Next year, Gyeonggi Province plans to conduct a call for participation from cities and counties for the special zone, then further review and announce the specific project scale and schedule.
Gyeonggi Province is also pursuing a plan to link the designed Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s designation of ‘Distributed Energy Specialized Areas.’ Distributed energy refers to the concept that electricity generated locally is used locally, contrasting with the current centralized energy supply system. Specialized areas are granted exceptions allowing distributed energy operators to supply electricity directly to users without going through the power market.
Kim Yeon-ji, Director of the Energy Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Cooperation with cities and counties is especially important to successfully promote the Gyeonggi RE100 Special Zone. Through the RE100 Special Zone project, we will strengthen cooperation with local governments and create a leading domestic model."
