Russia's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launched at Ukraine has been identified as the medium-range missile RS-26 Rubezh, according to an anonymous source cited by Ukrainska Pravda on the 21st (local time).
According to the report, the exact specifications of the RS-26 Rubezh are not known, but it was developed based on the RS-24 Yars missile and has a maximum range of 6,000 km. The outlet also stated that the RS-26 Rubezh is designed to carry nuclear warheads.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that on the morning of the same day, Russia launched an ICBM from the southern Astrakhan region while conducting attacks on Ukraine. This is the first time Russia has used an ICBM in this war. The Ukrainian Air Force said the attack targeted businesses and key infrastructure in the mid-eastern city of Dnipro. However, they did not disclose what exactly the ICBM struck or its specific type.
This Russian attack came after Ukraine launched the U.S. tactical ballistic missile ATACMS and the British cruise missile Storm Shadow on the 19th and 20th to attack Russia. Previously, Russia had warned that such attempts would escalate tensions.
