Ryukyung-gi Jungnang-gu Mayor Attends Launch Ceremony of 'Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council'

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) participated in the launch ceremony of the ‘Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council’ held at Dongdaemun-gu Office on the 21st, marking the official start of the undergrounding project.

This council was established by seven autonomous districts coming together to realize the undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line (Yongsan Station to Dobongsan Station, including branch lines).

At the launch ceremony, six district mayors belonging to the Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council along with Jungnang-gu (Yongsan, Seongdong, Dongdaemun, Seongbuk, Dobong, Nowon) attended, signed an agreement to promote the undergrounding project, and adopted a joint petition. The petition will be submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, emphasizing the importance of the undergrounding project and urging continuous discussions.

The Gyeongwon Line is one of Seoul’s major transportation axes, and the target undergrounding section spans 32.9 km crossing the seven districts belonging to the council. Jungnang-gu includes the Jungang Line connecting Cheongnyangni and Yangwon, and the Gyeongchun Line connecting Kwangwoon University Station and Sinnai Station within this section.

The council plans to promote the railway undergrounding reflecting the characteristics and demands of each district, focusing on improving residents’ quality of life and resolving regional disconnections through integrated development of the upper space and surrounding areas.

Additionally, through close cooperation with the central government including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seoul City, the council will jointly draw a concrete blueprint for the Gyeongwon Line undergrounding and integrated development of railway sites.

Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi of Jungnang-gu stated, “If the Gyeongwon Line, Jungang Line, and Gyeongchun Line are selected as pilot projects, it will solve issues such as regional disconnection caused by railways, noise, and dust, and also improve the aging areas around the railway. This will provide a better life for residents in the northeastern Seoul area including Jungnang-gu and serve as an important stepping stone for the district to leap forward as a new growth hub of Seoul.”
