Seoul's 7 Districts Join Hands to Sign Joint Petition to Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Strengthening Communication Between Seoul City and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport... Efforts for Prompt Project Implementation
Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 21st that it held the launching ceremony of the 'Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council,' which involves seven autonomous districts of Seoul.
The launching ceremony held at Dongdaemun-gu Office was attended by the district mayors of Yongsan, Seongdong, Dongdaemun, Jungnang, Seongbuk, Dobong, and Nowon, who signed the agreement to officially inaugurate the council.
They also signed a joint petition requesting the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to recognize the necessity of undergrounding the Gyeongwon Line and to expedite its implementation.
The Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council was formed to strengthen the cooperative system among the autonomous districts and to promptly advance the undergrounding project. The participating districts have discussed the project direction through district mayor meetings and working-level director meetings from May to October this year, and on October 31, they officially announced the council’s regulations.
The Gyeongwon Line undergrounding project is regarded as a key initiative to alleviate urban traffic congestion, contribute to balanced regional development, and improve the urban environment. Currently, the areas through which the Gyeongwon Line passes experience significant inconvenience in terms of traffic and living conditions, and there is a lack of efficient connectivity between road and rail networks.
Once undergrounding is realized, the existing above-ground space is expected to be redeveloped into parks, cultural facilities, and complex facilities, enhancing the quality of life for local residents. At the same time, it is anticipated to restore the urban ecosystem and bring various economic benefits such as revitalizing the local economy and increasing real estate values.
At the launching ceremony, Council Chairman Lee Pil-hyung said, “It is very meaningful that seven autonomous districts have united to take the first step toward undergrounding the Gyeongwon Line. The undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line is a long-standing wish of residents and an essential task for regional development. We will do our best to cooperate closely with Seoul City and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to ensure the smooth progress of the project.”
The Gyeongwon Line Undergrounding Promotion Council plans to regularly hold meetings to monitor the project’s progress and strengthen communication with Seoul City, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and citizens.
Additionally, it will pursue research and policy support related to the project while exploring various measures to realize the project.
