Kimchi Cabbage Delivery of 3,000 Heads to 1,000 Underprivileged Households
Yeongju City Saemaeul Association in Gyeongbuk (President Woo Young-seon) held the “2024 Beautiful Sharing Love Kimchi Making” event from the 19th to the 21st at the Yeongju Volunteer Center’s free meal service room, preparing 3,000 heads of kimchi to be delivered to 1,000 marginalized households, including elderly living alone and child-headed families.

The “Love Kimchi Sharing” event, held annually since 2004, is a representative winter volunteer activity of the Yeongju City Saemaeul Association, practicing community spirit and sharing in the local community for 20 years. This year, kimchi was made using napa cabbages and radishes grown directly at the Saemaeul farm, with about 300 Saemaeul leaders participating from kimchi making to packaging and distribution.
During this event, kimchi considering taste and nutrition was delivered to marginalized neighbors, helping to revive the culture of sharing that is disappearing due to urbanization and nuclear families.
The kimchi making process was carried out in order: harvesting napa cabbages on the first day, salting cabbages and preparing seasoning on the second day, and making and packaging kimchi on the last day. The packaged kimchi was distributed to neighbors in need through the Saemaeul chairpersons of 19 eup, myeon, and dong districts.
President Woo Young-seon of the Saemaeul Association said, “We made kimchi with all our heart so that neighbors facing a difficult winter amid soaring prices and cold waves would not have to worry about a warm meal,” adding, “I am grateful to the Saemaeul members who have been together for 20 years and will continue the spirit of sharing and volunteering.”
The Yeongju City Saemaeul Association continues to practice the Saemaeul spirit of sharing and consideration through various volunteer activities such as sharing love lunchboxes, home repairs for low-income households, and carbon-neutral environmental preservation campaigns.
