The government has finalized the draft of the '2050 Mid-to-Long-Term Nuclear Power Industry Roadmap,' which will outline the policy direction for the nuclear power industry until 2050. The government plans to conduct a final review of the draft through the last task force meeting and, after gathering opinions from related ministries and agencies, announce the final version as early as the end of this year.
On the 22nd, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it would hold the final (4th) meeting of the '2050 Mid-to-Long-Term Nuclear Power Roadmap Establishment TF' at the Korea Nuclear Industry Association, chaired by Vice Minister Choi Nam-ho.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, "This roadmap is part of laying the foundation to support the nuclear power industry stably regardless of changes in the political environment. Since March, the ministry has formed a related expert task force to carry out practical work." He added, "At this meeting, the draft of the roadmap to establish the mid-to-long-term vision and support measures for the nuclear power industry will be finally reviewed and confirmed."
The task force plans to present the target sales and employment scale of the domestic nuclear power industry by 2050 as the long-term vision of the roadmap. Strategies to achieve this include ▲advancement of nuclear power plant operations ▲becoming a leading country in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) ▲industrialization of nuclear power exports ▲strengthening the nuclear power industry foundation such as research and development, workforce, and investment ▲and enhancing nuclear policy infrastructure including laws, systems, and public acceptance.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will prepare the final version after collecting opinions from related ministries and agencies on the draft roadmap and plans to announce it within this year if possible.
Vice Minister Choi said, "I would like to express my gratitude to the committee members who have worked hard for a long time on the roadmap establishment, which began as a presidential directive during the Gyeongnam Livelihood Discussion in February." He added, "Along with the establishment of the roadmap, we will continuously promote the legal foundation such as the 'Special Act on Nuclear Power Industry Support' and the 'Special Act on High-Level Radioactive Waste,' firmly building a foundation that ensures future nuclear policies can be pursued steadily and predictably without wavering."
