Dr. Donghyuk Jeong of the Medical Physics Research Team at Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences Awarded the Korean Society of Medical Physics Outstanding Paper Award

Research on Flash Electron Beam Measurement... Utilizing Self-Developed Electron Accelerator Approved by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission

Dr. Donghyuk Jung of the Medical Physics Research Team at the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Center (Medical Director Changhoon Lee) recently received the Excellent Paper Award at the World Radiation Day and General Assembly hosted by the Korean Society of Medical Physics for his research on FLASH electron beam measurement.

Dr. Jung published a paper titled "Initial Dosimetry of Prototype Ultra-High Dose Rate Electron-Beam Irradiator for FLASH RT Preclinical Studies" in the specialized medical physics journal Progress in Medical Physics, recognizing the excellence of his research.

FLASH radiation therapy is a technique that delivers high-intensity radiation of over 40 Gray (Gy) per second to tumors within 0.1 seconds, known for minimizing side effects. However, various experimental studies and biological elucidations are still required for clinical application.

The Medical Physics Research Team at the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Center, together with radiation oncology medical staff, developed a preclinical electron accelerator and obtained final usage approval from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission on December 28, 2022, after passing the conformity review of the Nuclear Safety Act and technical standards by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety.

This study was also conducted using this accelerator, confirming through film dosimetry that the radiation intensity exceeded 40 Gy per second (up to 162 Gy), and the results were submitted in the paper.

Dr. Jung stated, “With radiation dose rates confirmed from 40 Gy/s to 162 Gy/s in this study, various experimental studies according to radiation dose intensity can be conducted in the future. We are actively advancing experimental research on FLASH radiation therapy using the self-developed research electron accelerator, and doctors and researchers are collaborating closely to ensure safe clinical application. As a leading medical center in radiation therapy, we will do our best in research and development to lead the world in cutting-edge radiation cancer treatment technologies utilizing FLASH and other methods.”

Last year, the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Center established a shielding laboratory for radiation therapy device development, precision machining room, and vacuum welding room within the Radiation Medicine Practical Application Center to conduct research for component development, performance testing, clinical application, and practical use.
