Preschool, Elementary, Middle, High, and Special Education Families Celebrate 'My Kimchi Day'
On the 22nd, in celebration of 'Kimchi Day,' the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education's efforts to instill proper and healthy eating habits in students using Korea's traditional food, kimchi, are drawing attention.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education will operate a 'Kimchi Making Experience Activity' program on the 22nd, both in the morning and afternoon, at the Geumjeong-gu Nutrition Education Experience Center for 1,150 fifth and sixth-grade elementary students and 100 families from kindergarten, elementary, middle, high, and special schools.
This program aims to enhance students' understanding of Korea's unique kimjang culture, which is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, to promote the inheritance of excellent traditional food culture and foster pride.
On that day, the Busan Office of Education will divide the program into a morning session titled 'Nutrition Experience Classroom Visiting Schools ? Traditional Kimchi Making' and an afternoon session called 'Family Nutrition Experience Day ? My Kimchi Day.'
The morning 'Traditional Kimchi Making' program will be conducted as an online experiential education using ZOOM between the Nutrition Education Experience Center and schools, where 1,150 students from 51 elementary classes will use pre-provided kimchi experience kits (including salted napa cabbage, kimchi seasoning, etc.).
Students will participate in the activity by class, making kimchi themselves and learning about the benefits of kimchi. In particular, it is expected that through this experience activity with friends, students will also develop community skills such as consideration and cooperation.
The 'My Kimchi Day' program will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the kitchen studio and other areas within the Nutrition Education Experience Center. The Busan Office of Education will assign a total of 16 instructors, including 4 main instructors and 12 family unit guidance instructors, to assist participants in smoothly experiencing kimchi making.
Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, "This kimchi making experience activity will serve as an opportunity to promote the excellence of our food and to inherit and develop traditional food culture. The Office of Education will do its best to support students in maintaining healthy eating habits through various programs linked to traditional food culture."
