‘The Changing Landscape of Performing Arts by AI’ Seminar Successfully Held... Busan Municipal Art Troupe and Cultural Arts Officials

Busan Cultural Center successfully held an AI seminar on the afternoon of the 19th at 3 PM in the Chamber Hall of Busan Cultural Center, under the theme "The Impact of Generative AI Technology on Performing Arts (Performance Venues and Arts Organizations)."

This seminar was planned to share the current development status of AI technology and AI utilization cases in various art fields such as performance and film, and to discuss the future impact of AI on the performing arts sector and ways for the Busan Metropolitan Arts Group to take the lead.

About 200 participants, including members of the seven Busan Metropolitan Arts Groups and cultural and artistic stakeholders in Busan, attended the seminar, where Professor Park Hee-jin from the Department of Social Welfare at Busan Health College served as the chairperson, leading the presentations and discussions.

The event consisted of △ AI and Culture & Arts (focusing on performing arts) △ Analysis of AI performance production cases and suggestions for the development of public performance venues and metropolitan arts groups △ Presentations on AI work production cases in related fields (film) and a comprehensive expert panel discussion.

First, Research Professor Jeon Byung-won (Dong-Eui University Film Transmedia Research Institute) shared AI application cases in the film field, which is proactively responding in the related area, and suggested directions for AI technology in the culture and arts sector.

Second, Professor Kim Joo-seop (Sogang University, Department of Art & Technology) discussed the potential introduction of AI in arts organizations and performance venues, the concept and categories of AI-created works, and related legal issues such as copyright.

In particular, he shared the media art collaboration case of the Busan Metropolitan Dance Company's 2019 performance "Nampung," demonstrating the potential for AI utilization in the performing arts field.

Following this, Son Sang-won, former director of the National Jeongdong Theater, presented the current status of AI technology application in the performing arts field and proposed ways for public performance venues and metropolitan arts groups to respond to AI technology development, based on AI creative work cases such as Korea's first AI theatrical play "Paphos."

After the presentations, panelists including Yeom Mi-soon, member of the National Gugak Orchestra (former acting artistic director of the National Gugak Orchestra), Lee Jung-yoon, artistic director of the Busan Metropolitan Dance Company, and Kim Ji-yong, artistic director of the Busan Metropolitan Theater Company, participated in a Q&A session with the audience.

Cha Jae-geun, CEO of Busan Cultural Center, stated, "In an environment where the closeness with AI is deepening, we will seek ways to develop performing arts programs utilizing AI."
