134 Defaulters Over 1 Year and 10 Million KRW, Total Arrears 3.9 Billion KRW
The list of high-amount and habitual delinquent taxpayers for local taxes has been published on the Changwon Special City website.
Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, disclosed the list of 134 high-amount delinquent taxpayers who have not paid local taxes and local administrative penalties and charges exceeding 10 million KRW for over one year from the date of delinquency, based on January 1 of this year, through the city website and Wetax.
Among the newly disclosed subjects, there are 100 individual local tax delinquents and 28 corporate entities, with a total delinquent amount of 3.5 billion KRW. For local administrative penalties and charges (including fines, enforcement charges, burdens, and compensation fees), there are 4 individuals and 2 corporate entities, with a total delinquent amount of 400 million KRW.
The disclosure of the list of high-amount and habitual delinquents is conducted nationwide simultaneously on the third Wednesday of November every year to raise awareness among delinquents and foster a culture of sincere tax payment. The disclosed information includes the delinquent's name, business name (corporate name, corporate representative), age, occupation, address, delinquent amount, and delinquent tax items.
The city provided prior notice of the disclosure to the subjects on the list and gave them an opportunity to explain for more than six months. Even after the list is disclosed, if more than 50% of the delinquent amount is paid or if the delinquent amount falls below 10 million KRW, the subject is excluded from the list.
Additionally, simultaneously with the disclosure of the list of high-amount and habitual local tax delinquents, the Korea Customs Service is entrusted with the collection of delinquent duties on imported goods. This allows for immediate seizure at airports of high-value goods or overseas direct purchase items brought in by the listed individuals upon their return from overseas travel.
Kim Myung-gon, Director of the Taxation Division, stated, “We will continue to uphold the value of fairness through strict measures against high-amount and habitual delinquents so that the majority of residents who pay their taxes faithfully do not feel deprived.”
