‘The Gallery Hosu’... Seoul's Only Gallery to Enjoy Exhibitions While Strolling by the Lake
Completion Ceremony and Opening Exhibition on November 22 at 5 PM... Over 50 Indoor and Outdoor Works Displayed
Showcasing Diverse Artworks with the Theme of 'Color' at Seokchon Lake, Where Nature's Colors Have Faded
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) will open the inaugural exhibition of the district-run art museum ‘The Gallery Hosu’ on November 22 at 5 PM.
‘The Gallery Hosu’ is the first standalone building art museum constructed by the district. Connected to the Seokchon Lake walking trail, it is the only place in Seoul where anyone can comfortably enjoy an exhibition while strolling around the lake.
To commemorate the opening, the district is hosting a special exhibition. Considering the museum’s location, the exhibition is designed to allow visitors to relax in the garden and appreciate the beauty of the artworks. The exhibition takes place throughout the entire museum space, including the indoor galleries, outdoor areas, rooftop, corridors, and mechanical rooms.
A highlight is the exhibition in the second gallery room themed around ‘color.’ Visitors can encounter a variety of colors at Seokchon Lake, where the early winter natural hues have faded. The exhibition features 22 works by three artists, making it accessible even to visitors with little experience in art exhibitions.
The participating artists are ▲ Lee Kyung, who collects adjectives and expresses them through color ▲ Jamie Lee, who conveys dreams, fantasy, and hope through color ▲ Ha Tae-im, who imbues emotions into color bands with intense hues.
Notably, Lee Kyung has incorporated colors from over 420 ‘colors as adjectives’ collected since 2012 into the works for this exhibition, selecting those that harmonize with Seokchon Lake. Viewing the artworks with the lake as a backdrop is expected to enrich the exhibition experience.
The first gallery room features an exhibition of works from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Art Bank collection. Through 18 works by 18 artists, including Kim Chang-yeol’s ‘Water Drops,’ visitors can get an overview of the flow of Korean modern painting history.
Outdoors, visitors can enjoy 19 works by installation artists Nam Da-hyun and Hwang Hye-seon, as well as sculptors Kang Jae-won, Park An-sik, and Cho Young-chul.
Especially on the opening day, Nam Da-hyun will perform ‘Jeff Koons Discount Sale’ in the front yard of the museum’s first floor. This performance parodies Jeff Koons, who holds the record for the highest artwork prices among living artists, by producing his iconic work ‘Balloon Dog’ on-site as if it were factory-made and distributing it to visitors.
The special opening exhibition will continue until February 28 of next year. Additionally, lectures by art influencers and conversations with artists are planned through the end of the year.
‘The Gallery Hosu’ is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 7 PM. Admission is free for all visitors.
Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “Seokchon Lake, widely known for its beautiful natural scenery, has now become a representative cultural and artistic tourist destination in Seoul. Going forward, through ‘The Gallery Hosu,’ we will present diverse and high-quality works so that residents and visitors can always find joy and happiness in art.”
