Residents, Experts, and Officials Collaborate to Achieve Remarkable Results in Solving Complex Local Issues
Various Win-Win Committees Operated by Region, by Civil Complaints, and for Disabled Persons

Mapo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Gang-su) held the ‘Coexistence Committee Sharing Event’ on November 19th in the seminar room on the 6th floor of Mapo Central Library.

This event was organized to share best practices among the activities of the Dong-level Coexistence Committees in Mapo-gu and to explore ways to further develop them.

About 200 committee members from each Dong-level Coexistence Committee attended the event, reflecting on the meaning of coexistence and cooperation, and reaffirming the importance of communication and conflict management.

The event began with a viewing of a video on the activities of the Coexistence Committees. Then, best practices were presented from Gongdeok-dong, Yonggang-dong, Seogang-dong, Hapjeong-dong, and Yeonnam-dong. Afterwards, a professional instructor provided training on conflict management and communication, followed by discussions on ways to enhance the capabilities of the committee members and the future direction of the Coexistence Committees.

Under the philosophy that “the best experts on Mapo are its residents,” Mapo-gu has been operating the Coexistence Committees since January 2023 as one of the top 10 core pledges of the 8th elected administration.

Each Dong-level Coexistence Committee is composed of local residents and experts from various fields such as lawyers, architects, and engineers.

Since 2023, a total of 112 meetings have been held to discuss various local issues and seek solutions.

To resolve complex civil complaints involving diverse stakeholders where consensus is difficult, the district separately operates a ‘Civil Complaint-specific Coexistence Committee’ and a ‘Disability Coexistence Committee’ to incorporate the opinions of persons with disabilities in welfare policies.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “Listening to and communicating with residents who know local issues best is the core of Mapo-gu’s policies under the 8th elected administration. Based on the voices of residents, we will create policies that everyone can agree on and realize a ‘coexisting Mapo.’”
