Installation of 11 Units at 5 Locations Including Kkachisan Market
"In case of fire, call 119? Just open the underground fire extinguisher box."
Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) has installed underground fire extinguisher boxes that anyone can easily use in traditional markets vulnerable to fire accidents due to difficulty in fire truck access.

Traditional markets have stores closely packed together and narrow surroundings, making it difficult for fire trucks to pass and installing outdoor fire hydrants challenging, which increases the risk of fires spreading rapidly. Accordingly, the district installed underground fire extinguisher boxes in a total of 11 locations, including three places in Kkachisan Market and four places in Nambu Golmok Market. A disaster management fund of 270 million KRW was used for the installation.
The underground fire extinguisher box is a firefighting facility that installs and stores water-spraying equipment such as fire hoses in an underground storage box. It has the advantage of not obstructing passage and allowing easy access for fire trucks.
The usage is also simple. Anyone, including merchants and residents, can easily use it by opening the cover of the box and pulling the hose located underground. In this regard, the district plans to provide education on how to use the fire extinguisher boxes to merchants so that anyone can autonomously respond early in case of fire. The district expects that the installed fire extinguisher boxes will contribute to early response and minimizing fire damage in case of fire.
District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, "Traditional markets attract many visitors and have densely packed stores, increasing fire risk, so we installed underground fire extinguisher boxes that anyone can easily use," adding, "We expect this to greatly help protect the safety of merchants and visitors through prompt action in case of fire."
