The Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office's Gyeonggi Peace Plaza Book Cafe announced on the 19th that it conducted a 100-day reading challenge called ‘Reading Sapience’ for employees of the Northern Office from July 25 to October 22 to foster a ‘workplace culture of reading.’

The reading challenge, held for the first time this year, is part of the ‘Ji-Deok-Che (智·德·體) Project’ targeting employees of the Gyeonggi Northern Office. The ‘Ji-Deok-Che Project’ consists of the reading challenge (Ji), leftover food challenge (Deok), and health change-up (Che), designed to promote a healthy organizational culture.

The reading challenge was conducted by borrowing desired books from the Gyeonggi Peace Plaza Book Cafe and submitting reviews online. Among the ten employees who read the most books and wrote sincere reviews, Seungjun Oh, a staff member of the Industrial Location Division, Industrial 6, was finally selected as the ‘Reading King.’

In response to the decline in adult reading rates (43% in 2023) and reading volume (3.9 books in 2023), the Gyeonggi Peace Plaza Book Cafe at the Gyeonggi Northern Office continues to implement activities to spread reading culture, such as operating an outdoor library combining books and culture, the latest AI book recommendation system, and a ‘direct loan service’ for desired books.

Afternoon Seok Oh, Deputy Governor for Administration 2 of Gyeonggi Province, said, “With increased interest in books following author Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature, I hope this challenge will serve as an opportunity to spread the reading culture,” adding, “In the era of artificial intelligence where creative capabilities are emphasized, reading is even more important.”
