Overcoming Regional Extinction Risks and Providing Career Opportunities for Jeonnam Students
Kim Dae-jung, the Superintendent of Education for Jeonnam Province, expressed strong support on the 16th for the agreement on the integration of the National Mokpo University and National Suncheon University and the establishment of an integrated medical school.
In a statement released that day, Superintendent Kim said, “The integration of the two national universities representing Jeonnam will serve as a solid foundation to overcome the crisis of regional extinction caused by population decline,” adding, “Advancing the establishment of the medical school, which is the heartfelt wish of all residents, and serving as an opportunity to resolve the long-standing East-West conflict in Jeonnam, this holds significant meaning.”
Superintendent Kim emphasized, “The creation of a flagship national university with global competitiveness in Jeonnam and the establishment of a national medical school will greatly assist Jeonnam students in their career choices,” and added, “By providing more opportunities for Jeonnam students to pursue higher education, it will prevent the outflow of talented individuals and bring new hope.”
He continued, “The integration of the two universities and the establishment of the integrated medical school will not only reduce the economic burden on parents but also accelerate the realization of ‘Jeonnam-style educational autonomy,’ where Jeonnam students grow and enjoy happiness within Jeonnam.”
He noted, “The integration of the two universities, both selected for the Ministry of Education’s ‘Glocal 30’ universities, will act as positive energy for the ‘Glocal Education’ initiative promoted by Jeonnam education,” expressing expectations for the mutually beneficial development of the integrated Glocal university heading to the world and ‘Glocal Jeonnam education,’ where the region and the world coexist.”
He added, “Since the two universities have shown maturity by making a magnanimous decision to fulfill the long-standing wishes of the residents and solve regional problems by themselves, the government must now step forward and promptly fulfill its promise to establish the medical school,” and stated, “The Provincial Office of Education will spare no effort to fully cooperate to ensure that the university integration and medical school establishment proceed without any setbacks.”
