Anseong-si "Perfect Response to Fine Dust in Winter"

Enclosed Safe Rest Areas Established at Bus Stops
Efficiency Increased with Data-Driven Water Sprinkler Truck Operation

Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province has prepared various safety measures to respond to fine dust during the winter season.

On the 18th, Anseong City announced that it has prepared countermeasures such as fine dust safe shelters and data-based water spraying truck operations in preparation for the 6th Fine Dust Seasonal Management System (December to March).

First, the city operates enclosed and open-type fine dust safe shelters to reduce citizens' damage from fine dust. The "enclosed type" refers to fine dust safe shelters installed at bus stops. Through the Internet of Things (IoT) system, it operates air purifiers and heating/cooling devices, and provides close guidance and promotion to citizens by offering fine dust response tips, air quality concentration, and fine dust forecast concentrations.

The open-type fine dust safe shelters are installed in areas with high foot traffic so that people can stay briefly during high-concentration fine dust occurrences. The structure is designed so that clean air pushes out bad air through several grooves installed on the ceiling during high fine dust concentration events. This system's fine dust reduction rate has been officially confirmed in tests conducted by the Korea Institute of Construction & Living Environment Testing & Research. The city also monitors the shelters in real-time through air quality measuring devices installed inside the shelters at the Fine Dust Response Center.

At the Fine Dust Response Center, data is provided to the officials of towns, townships, and neighborhoods to appropriately operate water spraying trucks in areas with high concentrations during high fine dust events. Additionally, during high fine dust alerts, the city broadcasts alerts through fine dust traffic lights so that all citizens can check them.

Meanwhile, the city also operates the "Clean and Cooling Road" system every year from late March to late November. This system, which applies IoT technology, suppresses road dust scattering to lower fine dust concentrations and reduces surrounding temperatures during heatwaves. According to the city's records of the Clean and Cooling Road system this summer, the road surface temperature dropped from 51.4°C to 38.4°C after 30 minutes of spraying, and fine dust concentration per 1㎥ decreased from 44㎍ to 24㎍, while ultrafine dust dropped from 28㎍ to 16㎍.

Meanwhile, the city has won the Fine Dust Reduction Excellence Award in the city and county evaluation hosted by Gyeonggi Province for five consecutive years from 2020 to this year. A city official said, "We will continue to make steady efforts to protect citizens' health through Anseong City's specialized fine dust policies and projects by collecting opinions from the field."
