High expectations for complex development linked to local projects such as Gwangwoon University Station area and Changdong Vehicle Base
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced on the 21st that it attended the launch ceremony of the 'Gyeongwon Line Underground Promotion Council (Chairman Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu)' to explore cooperation measures for realizing the undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line railway.
This is to achieve the common goal of having the Gyeongwon Line (Yongsan Station to Dobongsan Station, including branch lines) within Seoul finally reflected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's integrated railway underground development pilot project and comprehensive plan.
The council consists of seven autonomous districts: Nowon, Yongsan, Seongdong, Dongdaemun, Jungnang, Seongbuk, and Dobong. On August 23, a preliminary meeting was held to prepare joint promotion plans for the project through mutual exchange among the districts.
The Gyeongwon Line is one of Seoul's important transportation axes, and the target underground section spans 32.9 km across the seven districts belonging to the council. The council plans to cooperate by reflecting the regional characteristics of each district so that the undergrounding project connects the divided urban areas and brings tangible benefits to residents through integrated development of the railway upper area and surrounding regions.
Among the sections jointly promoted by the council, Nowon-gu includes approximately 4.6 km of railway from Seokgye Station to Chang-dong Station.
This area is highly anticipated as an emerging industrial hub in northeastern Seoul, with major local redevelopment projects lined up such as the recently commenced Kwangwoon University Station area development, Chang-dong vehicle depot development, and the district unit plan around Seokgye Station.
The district government judges that undergrounding the above-ground railway section is essential not only to improve residents' convenience through comprehensive spatial utilization near the area but also to ensure well-coordinated linkage among various development projects.
To this end, the district is actively cooperating with the council, conducting research projects to derive complex development plans, and recently conducted a site visit to Tokyo, Japan, to study excellent cases of urban development linked with railways.
On the 21st, the council plans to adopt a joint petition for reflecting the Gyeongwon Line section in the undergrounding pilot project and submit it to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport with signatures.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Through the undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line, we must eliminate regional disparities and create a balanced and harmonious urban landscape,” adding, “We will continuously express our opinions through cooperation among autonomous districts to ensure the Gyeongwon Line is reflected in the undergrounding pilot project and comprehensive plan.”
