Smart car software (SW) platform company Obigo announced on the 18th that it has developed an application program to verify the performance of next-generation vehicle communication ‘5G-NR-V2X’ in the national project ‘Development and Verification of Next-Generation Autonomous Driving Vehicle Communication Technology.’
A company official said, “V2X communication enables cooperative autonomous driving by allowing not only autonomous vehicles but also other surrounding vehicles, road infrastructure, pedestrians, and all road users to exchange useful information with each other,” adding, “With the completion of program verification, this will serve as an opportunity to accelerate the introduction of 5G-NR-V2X to support driver mobility innovation and autonomous driving services of level 4 or higher.”
This project, worth a total of 16.3 billion KRW, aims to develop application software for verifying the performance of domestically produced 5G-NR-V2X and to secure high-quality data. It is intended to secure a leading position in the next-generation vehicle communication market and establish the foundation for the connected autonomous driving industry. From February 2022 to the end of 2025, many vehicle service specialized companies and research institutions are participating in this project, which covers everything from the development of domestic communication equipment to the establishment of standard systems and verification.
In particular, Obigo was selected as a joint research institution due to its recognized expertise in connectivity-based software development, data, and services. Obigo is responsible for developing and demonstrating application software programs for verifying 5G-NR-V2X, which features ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and high reliability in the advanced driving field. Additionally, the self-developed application program collects data such as vehicle location, direction, and speed, and shares it mutually between vehicles for analysis. It plans to provide a safer mobility experience by delivering real-time risk alerts to drivers during lane changes.
In 2023, the company developed one application program through R&D efforts including △advancement of the DRS (Driving Route Sharing) algorithm △development of a test simulator and center data collection △UI (User Interface) design △V2X communication performance measurement. This year, it additionally developed the IFS-CAV (Information Share for Connected Autonomous Vehicle) application SW. It also enhanced the project’s completeness by developing an autonomous driving control system to provide recently collected data to external organizations.
Han Doohyun, Chief Technology Officer of Obigo, said, “The development of application software based on 5G-NR-V2X will be an important milestone supporting the advancement of fully autonomous driving technology,” adding, “Through the commercialization of core SW for ultra-high-speed (over 150 Mbps), ultra-low latency (under 3 ms), and high reliability (over 99.99%) communication between vehicles, we will provide optimized solutions and services for the upcoming autonomous driving era.”
Meanwhile, Obigo has released the source code and results developed in this project as open source so that other companies and research institutions can also use them. The goal is to lead the enhancement of technological competitiveness in the automotive industry.
