NYT Reports Reactions to Trump Supporters' Cabinet Picks
"Supporters Focus on Different Aspects Despite Villainous Image"

Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, has announced a groundbreaking cabinet lineup, sparking enthusiasm among his supporters. On the 16th (local time), The New York Times (NYT) reported, “To critics, the Trump cabinet appears to be composed of villains with questionable qualifications and judgment, but supporters see something different,” conveying the voices of Trump supporters. It also explained, “Trump supporters tended to describe the cabinet nominees as independent and reform-minded figures brought in to fulfill Trump’s promise of ‘Washington (U.S. politics) reform.’”

Aileen Margolis (58), who runs a tattoo business in Western Florida, called the recently revealed Trump cabinet a “masterpiece” and said, “If it were a painting, it would be a Picasso.” Joan Warwick (60), a former Democrat from Detroit, described the Trump cabinet nominees as a “great coalition,” while Judy Kanuie, a retiree living in Platt Rock, North Carolina, called it a “star casting.” Notably, Kanuie, who had been a lifelong Democrat, reportedly voted for the Republican candidate Trump for the first time in this election.

Recently, concerns have been raised not only by the Democratic Party but also by some Republicans regarding individuals appointed to key positions in Trump’s second-term administration. In particular, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated as Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been controversial for promoting conspiracy theories that vaccines cause autism and other conditions even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Matt Gaetz, nominated as Attorney General, has been investigated for allegations of soliciting sex from a 17-year-old girl.

Trump supporters have shown mixed reactions to this. For example, Kennedy Jr. is seen as a “fighter seeking new solutions for chronic diseases,” and Gaetz is viewed as a “provocateur ready to punish Democrats who unfairly prosecuted President-elect Trump.” Meryl McCollum (60), living in Bozeman, Montana, told the NYT, “I like them because they seem so crazy.” Brian Kozlowski (40), a lawyer residing in Orlando, said, “Eliminating the ‘swamp’ in Washington is the most important task for Trump supporters.”

However, not all nominees were welcomed. Some said that nominating Gaetz, who is controversial in both parties, “could cause unnecessary confusion,” and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, nominated as Secretary of State, was criticized as “not reform-minded enough.” Additionally, Cole Graham (30), living in Arizona, criticized Fox News host Pete Hegseth, nominated as Secretary of Defense, as “too aggressive.”
