Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed to U.S. President Joe Biden that China will not accept conflict and chaos on the Korean Peninsula.
According to China Central Television (CCTV) on the 17th, President Xi held a bilateral summit with President Biden on the 16th (local time) in Lima, Peru, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit was held.
At the meeting, President Xi emphasized, "China will not allow conflict and chaos to occur on the Korean Peninsula," and "China will not stand by while its strategic security and core interests are threatened."
CCTV reported that President Xi stated, "China's position and role on the Ukraine issue have been consistently fair and just," adding, "This involves shuttle diplomacy mediation and encouraging peaceful dialogue; China has been striving for peace and working towards stabilizing the situation." On the same day, President Biden urged President Xi to use his influence over North Korea and Russia to prevent North Korea from sending additional troops to the Ukraine war.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Xi said, "'Taiwan independence' separatist actions are incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," and added, "If the United States wants to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait, the key is to clearly recognize the 'Taiwan independence' nature of Lai Ching-te (Taiwan’s Vice President) and the Democratic Progressive Party authorities, handle the Taiwan issue prudently, firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence,' and support China's peaceful reunification."
President Xi stated, "China will resolutely safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea," and added, "Dialogue and negotiation among the parties concerned have always been the best way to resolve disputes in the South China Sea. The United States should not intervene in bilateral disputes over islands and reefs in the Nansha Islands (the Chinese name for the Spratly Islands), nor should it provoke or support provocations and conflicts."
