Biden and Xi Jinping: "No Trigger for Conflict... Not a Solution for Decoupling" ... Final Summit Meeting

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a summit meeting at the Chinese delegation's hotel in Lima, Peru, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit was held, discussing bilateral relations and international issues.

According to the White House joint press corps on the 16th (local time), President Biden emphasized in his opening remarks, "Our two countries must not let competition escalate into conflict," adding, "That is our responsibility, and over the past four years, I believe we have proven that such a relationship can be maintained."

He continued, "We have not always agreed, but the dialogue has always been candid," and "We have never deceived each other."

In his opening remarks, President Xi sent a message of both hope and caution regarding the stabilization of bilateral relations toward then-President-elect Donald Trump.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi mentioned the U.S. presidential election, stating, "China's goal to strive for stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations remains unchanged, as does the principle of handling China-U.S. relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation."

He added, "China is willing to continue maintaining dialogue, expanding cooperation, and managing differences with the U.S. government," and "We are committed to realizing a smooth transition in China-U.S. relations and benefiting the peoples of both countries." Furthermore, he stated, "Decoupling and supply chain disruptions are not solutions."

This summit marks the third face-to-face meeting between President Biden and President Xi. It is expected to be the last face-to-face summit between the two leaders.
