At around 5:10 p.m. on the 14th, Ms. A was caught in the driver’s door of her compact sedan in an underground parking lot of an apartment in Danwon-gu, Ansan City. The accident occurred when she opened the driver’s door and tried to get out without shifting the gear from drive (D) to park (P) after parking.

As the vehicle slowly moved forward, the driver’s door that Ms. A had opened to exit hit a parking pillar on the left side, causing the door to close again and trapping her body in between. Ms. A was discovered by residents only 30 minutes after the accident occurred. A witness immediately called 119, and Ms. A was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but died during treatment.

The police explained, “We believe Ms. A was trying to stop the vehicle while half of her body was outside the driver’s door and collided with the pillar, causing the accident,” adding, “The vehicle stopped after the accident.”

There was a similar recent accident. At the end of last month, in Tapdong-dong, Dongducheon City, Gyeonggi Province, a woman in her 50s, Ms. A, was caught between her car and a parking barrier machine. She was taken to the hospital unconscious and eventually died. She had left the gear in drive (D) while trying to pay the parking fee, opened the door to get out, and the vehicle moved, colliding with the barrier. The door then closed, trapping her body.
