Emphasizing the 'Zero Tolerance for Sexual Crimes' Principle in China
Immediate Execution of Three Minor Sexual Assault Offenders
Supreme People's Court: "Will Never Forgive"
As China emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual crimes against minors, it has recently been revealed that three rapists were immediately sentenced to death.
On the 14th (local time), local media including Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the First Criminal Division of the Supreme People's Court executed the death sentences of three minor rapists, Guo Mo, Xiang Mo, and Gong Mo, the day before. All three were sentenced to death in both the first and second trials, and the Supreme People's Court gave final approval for the sentences to be carried out. The court condemned, "Their criminal acts caused serious harm to minors, the nature of the crimes is heinous, and the damage to society is extremely severe."
According to the details, Guo Mo exploited his position as the principal of a private elementary school to sexually assault six female students under the age of 14 over 100 times from 2013 to 2019. He was also accused of molesting three female students under the age of 12 multiple times. Xiang Mo lured minors from 2011 to 2020 at places such as parks, kindergarten entrances, and squares, taking them to hiding places to commit sexual assault. During this process, he secretly filmed the crimes, leaving behind photos and videos. One of the victims reportedly suffered from severe depression and anxiety disorders and eventually took her own life. Gong Mo was accused of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 12 who frequently visited the store he operated over an extended period. He also conspired with others to commit the crimes together, and the victim who suffered from sexual crimes ultimately died at the age of 16.
On the day, a spokesperson for the Supreme People's Court stated, "Sexual crimes against minors seriously damage the physical and mental health of minors and cause great harm to society," adding, "Such crimes will be strictly punished according to the law and will never be forgiven."
Meanwhile, China clarified its laws on rape and obscene acts against minors last year. If a woman is raped by violence or other means of threat, the criminal law stipulates imprisonment of three to ten years. Furthermore, if the victim is a minor under the age of 14, the punishment is increased to imprisonment of more than ten years, life imprisonment, or the death penalty. Although the statistics on executions are not publicly disclosed, it is known that thousands of death sentences are carried out annually.
