Emart Offers Vegetable Discounts at 'Kimjang Daejeon'... "3 Napa Cabbages for 4,488 Won"

Emart announced on the 15th that it will hold a 'Kimjang Grand Sale' until the 21st. Amid rising prices of kimchi-making vegetables such as napa cabbage and radish, leading to an increase in so-called 'Gimpo-jok' who give up making kimchi and buy it instead, Emart plans to stabilize kimjang prices by discounting main and supplementary ingredients for kimjang.

First, domestic napa cabbage 1 net (3 heads) will be sold at a promotional price of 4,488 KRW. This price is based on a 20% discount from the regular price of 7,480 KRW when accumulating Shinsegae points in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, plus an additional 20% discount when paying in full with the promotional card. Simply put, one head of napa cabbage can be purchased for 1,496 KRW.

Considering that the average wholesale price for premium napa cabbage (about 10kg, 3 heads, net) was 8,702 KRW on the 13th according to the Seoul Agricultural & Marine Products Corporation, this price is about 48% cheaper than the wholesale price. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) Agricultural Product Distribution Information (KAMIS), the average retail price for one head of napa cabbage on the 13th was 3,693 KRW, making this about 59% cheaper in comparison.

Emart has prepared 300,000 nets (900,000 heads) of napa cabbage, which is 15% more than last year.

Radish, an essential kimjang vegetable, is also discounted. Domestic radish bunches (5-6 pieces per bunch) will be offered at a promotional price of 4,188 KRW. Like napa cabbage, this price includes a 20% discount linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plus an additional 20% discount when paying with the promotional card.

'Jeju peeled garlic (1kg, bag, domestic)' will be offered at 8,980 KRW. In particular, the Namdo variety of garlic, which is spicier and has a stronger garlic aroma than the Daeseo variety and is popular for seasoning, is offered at a special price. ▲Large-sized peeled green onions (bunch, domestic) ▲Yeosu Dolsan mustard greens (bunch, domestic) ▲Fresh soil ginger (500g, bag, domestic) and other kimjang vegetables are also offered at a 20% discount when accumulating Shinsegae points.

The seasonal delicacy 'Namhaean bagged oysters (250g, bag, domestic)' will be sold at 5,586 KRW with a 30% discount when accumulating Shinsegae points, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. 'Brand pork front leg, hind leg, and ribs (chilled, domestic)' suitable for boiled pork dishes will be offered at a 20% discount when accumulating Shinsegae points. However, the Jeju region is excluded.

Processed foods and supplies for kimjang are also discounted. For all CJ fish sauce products, customers who spend over 20,000 KRW will receive a 3,000 KRW Shinsegae gift certificate, and 'Seomdeulchae premium sun-dried salt (3kg)' and 'Chinjeong Eomma solar-dried red pepper powder (1kg)' are offered at special prices. Additionally, kimjang mats, kimjang bags, rubber gloves, sanitary gloves, and stainless steel storage containers are sold at affordable prices.

Warehouse-style discount store Traders will also join the effort to stabilize kimjang prices by holding a Kimjang Festival from the 18th to the 24th. 'Domestic fresh solar-dried red pepper powder (1kg)' will be sold at 20,980 KRW, and 'Seomdeulchae sun-dried salt (3kg)' at 6,980 KRW. 'Domestic chilled pork belly and neck retail packs' and 'Domestic trimmed pork belly retail pack (whole)' will be discounted by 5,000 KRW and 7,000 KRW respectively when paid with a Samsung Card. Other items such as kimchi containers and sanitary gloves are also discounted.

Yoon Saemi, Emart's vegetable buyer, said, "Although the high price trend for napa cabbage continues this year, Emart has been continuously offering reasonably priced napa cabbage compared to market prices through thorough pre-planning of supply volumes," adding, "We expect customers to be able to purchase various kimjang ingredients, including napa cabbage, at affordable prices through this Kimjang Grand Sale event."
