Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that it promoted international exchange with Hakusan Tedorigawa Global Geopark in Japan for six days from the 7th to the 12th.

Hakusan Tedorigawa Global Geopark shares geological similarities with Hantan River Global Geopark, as both are basalt regions and river-centered geoparks. Moreover, it holds a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it a region with academic value similar to Yeoncheon-gun, which is a UNESCO multiple designation area.
During this exchange, a total of 15 sites were visited, including 10 geological attractions and 5 tourist spots in Yeoncheon, Pocheon, and Cheorwon of Hantan River Global Geopark.
Mr. Akie Yamaguchi, the team leader in charge of the geopark at Hakusan City, Japan, said, “Hantan River Global Geopark is operated at an international level befitting the reputation of a global geopark. In particular, I was impressed by the tactile guideboards at Jaein Falls, the barrier-free decks, and the Eum Mate interpretation program, which are operated to be accessible for people with disabilities.”
Yeoncheon-gun and Hakusan Tedorigawa Global Geopark first met at the 10th Global Geoparks Conference held in Marrakech, Morocco in 2023. At that time, the visiting delegation including Mayor Toshikatsu Tamura of Hakusan City expressed their intention to pursue international exchange with Yeoncheon-gun in the future. Continuing this connection, the Hantan River and Hakusan delegations met again at the 8th Asia-Pacific Global Geoparks Network Conference held in Cao Bang, Vietnam this year, discussed exchanges, and planned this visit.
A Yeoncheon-gun official stated, “Through this meeting, we were able to confirm the willingness for exchange between Hakusan City and Yeoncheon-gun. Furthermore, we aim to actively promote international exchange with Hakusan City, including signing agreements, to widely publicize and develop Yeoncheon-gun as a UNESCO double crown city.”
Meanwhile, Hantan River Global Geopark has received a recommendation from UNESCO to exchange with other geoparks with similar characteristics, and it is promoting international exchange to fulfill this.
