Previously, the Gochang Bokbunja and vinegar industry special zone was designated in 2004 as the nation’s first special zone, covering 5,088,404㎡ in Asan-myeon, Simwon-myeon, and Buan-myeon areas. Since then, 21 detailed projects have been completed, including the creation of the Bokbunja Theme Park (recreational area), Bokbunja Agro-Industrial Complex, and the development of strategic food industry projects related to Bokbunja.
Additionally, continuous investment in projects such as support for Bokbunja production and cultivation and globalization of the Bokbunja brand is fostering growth suited to the conditions of the Gochang region. As a result, in 2020, it was selected as an “Excellent Regional Special Zone Nationwide” in the performance evaluation by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The county added a new project called the “Rural Tourism Star Village Contest.” Centered on Gochang Bokbunja wine, it plans to operate various wine experience facilities, local specialty product sales outlets, and wine exhibitions and programs to promote sustainable Bokbunja industry and tourism revitalization.
Gochang Bokbunja accounts for 45% of the national production volume. As the undisputed number one production area nationwide, “No. 3 Gochang Bokbunja Wine” and “No. 35 Gochang Bokbunja” are registered as geographical indications, greatly enhancing the value of the local specialty product name.
Shim Deok-seop, the governor of Gochang-gun, said, “Taking this approval of the special zone plan change as an opportunity, we will do our best to further develop the Bokbunja and vinegar industries and recreate the renaissance of Gochang Bokbunja.”
