The attendees received a report from Suncheon National University on the progress of the medical school attraction efforts, discussed various local government support measures, and strengthened their determination to successfully attract the medical school.

Suncheon National University, along with discussions on establishing an integrated medical school with Mokpo National University, thoroughly analyzed the feasibility study results for establishing a medical school in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do and the land and building requirements necessary for the medical school. On the 30th of last month, it preliminarily selected the main campus site and the university-affiliated farm as candidate sites for the medical school and affiliated hospital establishment.

Park Byeong-hee, Head of the Medical School Establishment Promotion Team at Suncheon National University, explained the progress of the medical school establishment during the event, stating, “With the active support from Suncheon City, this event secured the Shindae Medical Site in addition to the existing university-owned land, enhancing competitiveness. If the related procedures are completed as planned by Suncheon City and the site for foreign educational institutions within the Shindae district is added, the establishment of the medical school in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do will gain even more momentum.”

Suncheon National University had previously selected the Shindae Medical Site (56,558㎡) as a candidate site for the university’s medical school hospital in 2017 and signed an agreement with Suncheon City.

Through this event, Suncheon City pledged to provide medical land to improve local residents’ medical welfare and expressed its willingness to provide active administrative support, thereby strengthening Suncheon National University’s efforts to attract the medical school.

If Suncheon City provides a larger site in the Shindae district in the future, Suncheon National University is expected to secure a site optimized for the establishment of a medical school and affiliated hospital in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do, with both location advantages and economic feasibility.

Lee Byeong-woon, President of Suncheon National University, said, “Suncheon National University will realize a regionally self-sufficient medical system covering the eastern region of Jeollanam-do as well as the western region of Gyeongnam including Namhae and Hadong, and establish an optimal medical school and affiliated hospital capable of meeting the medical demands of local residents, such as emergency and industrial accident care. I deeply appreciate Suncheon City’s active efforts in attraction and support, and we will continue thorough preparations through ongoing cooperation.”
