How Do Books Change Us?... Nowon-gu Hosts 'Immortal Masterclass' Featuring Author Kim Young-ha

Based on the author's rich experience, a lecture on 'Why We Read Books' unfolds
The final unforgettable lecture of 2024 following 'Vincent van Gogh,' 'Slow Aging Life,' and 'Ecological Transition'
Online pre-registration for 500 people starts from the 18th

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will host the last "Immortal Masterclass" of 2024 by inviting writer Kim Young-ha.


The Immortal Masterclass is the district's representative lifelong education program that invites prominent figures from various fields such as humanities, health, science, and popular culture to discuss contemporary issues and life. Since its inception in 2019, physicist Kim Sang-wook, art critic Yoo Hong-jun, and others have taken the stage to communicate specialized knowledge in an easy-to-understand manner to the residents.


The upcoming lecture, held on December 6 at 3 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Nowon-gu Citizens' Hall, will feature writer Kim Young-ha as the speaker under the theme "Why Do We Read Books?"


Writer Kim Young-ha has authored novels such as Memoirs of a Murderer, I Have the Right to Destroy Myself, Black Flower, and The Reason for Travel. He actively communicates with the public through appearances on broadcasts like tvN’s Alssul Sinjab and You Quiz on the Block.


In this lecture, Kim will interestingly and pleasantly share his rich experiences on why we must read books in an era flooded with countless contents, and what changes can occur through reading.

Residents who wish to participate can apply online starting from the 18th on the Nowon-gu Office website or register on-site on the day of the lecture. Online registration is limited to 500 people, and on-site registration to 100 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free, and seating is unassigned with free seating.


Additionally, the district will provide sign language interpreters for residents with language and hearing disabilities, and for those unable to attend in person, the lecture will be streamed live on Nowon-gu’s official YouTube channel "Mihongssi."


This year’s Immortal Masterclass featured ▲ docent Jung Woo-cheol with "Vincent van Gogh ? The Painter of the Brightest Passion," ▲ Professor Jung Hee-won of Geriatrics at Seoul Asan Medical Center with "Designing a Life of Aging Slowly," and ▲ Professor Choi Jae-chun, a leading biologist in Korea, with "Ecological Transition ? Climate and Biodiversity Crisis."


Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “The ability to think critically and the humanities literacy through reading are becoming increasingly important,” adding, “In an era flooded with countless information through media, I hope this will be a valuable time to reconsider the importance of reading.”
