Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced that the Doksan 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee (Chairman Yang Hoon-sik) was selected for the ‘2024 Seoul Metropolitan Government Landscape Award and Garden City Award’ contest and received the Encouragement Award.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government selects and awards excellent cases of garden creation to spread garden culture, where citizens take the lead in planting and cultivating flowers and trees in their daily lives.

The Doksan 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee submitted the project ‘Creating Pocket Forests in Our Neighborhood’ and was selected as an excellent case of a garden city. ‘Creating Pocket Forests in Our Neighborhood’ is a resident-participatory green space creation project that utilizes small leftover lands or idle spaces hidden throughout the village to create small forests and gardens.

They created flower beds on underutilized idle land around the Doksan 3-dong multipurpose public parking lot and established pocket forests in spaces that were previously concrete floors. As a result, frequent complaints about illegal dumping and homeless issues were improved, and the quality of the living environment in the area was enhanced.

Also, the pocket forests created at the entrance of Bansu Children's Park and Doksan Natural Ecology Park have become resting places where residents gather to relax and take walks. Local residents can cultivate and care for nature together in the pocket forests, building a sense of community.

The Doksan 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee received a prize money of 2.5 million won and a commemorative plaque at the award ceremony held at Seoul City Hall on November 8.

Yang Hoon-sik, Chairman of the Doksan 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee, said, “We plan to continue the pocket forest creation project based on this award,” and added, “We will do our best to remain a model case of cultivating gardens and improving the village environment together with the residents.”

Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon said, “This award is a valuable result achieved through residents joining forces to improve the local environment and create a better neighborhood,” and expressed gratitude to the Doksan 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee for their efforts, promising continued active support for residents' autonomy activities.”
