Lyn May, a Chinese-Mexican, was a very popular dancer and actress in Mexico during the 1970s and 1980s. She appeared in about 100 films and music videos. However, in the early 1990s, she suffered severe side effects from illegal cosmetic procedures performed on her face. According to Mexican media, Lyn underwent cosmetic procedures to improve the shape of her cheekbones and jawline. The problem was that what she thought were simple Botox and collagen injections were actually injections of cooking oil, baby oil, and water-based substances into her skin. This caused ugly lumps to form on her face, and although she underwent plastic surgery to correct the scars, her condition worsened.

Although illegal procedures have significantly decreased compared to the past, there are still cases today where foreign substances such as paraffin or Vaseline injected 20 to 30 years ago cause complications like skin necrosis, depressions, and inflammation. A representative example is the case of Han Hye-kyung, once known as the "Fan Lady." Han, who died in 2018, reportedly injected unverified liquid silicone into her face in an attempt to receive cheap Botox treatments.

As a side effect, her face swelled to about three times its normal size. The biggest problem with illegal procedures is that patients often do not know what substances were injected, lack medical knowledge, and the procedures are frequently performed in unhygienic conditions. Because of this, even if problems arise, it is difficult to remove or restore the affected areas. Even after removal, some residue often remains, causing ongoing side effects. Therefore, no matter how simple a cosmetic procedure may seem, it is essential to consult a dermatologist and receive injections of verified substances.
