Dongdaemun-gu Accelerates Scholarship Support Program

Scholarships totaling 140.6 million KRW awarded to 153 elementary, middle, and high school students
Total cumulative support of 1.3212 billion KRW since related ordinance enacted in 2009

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) announced on the 11th that it has awarded scholarships to 153 elementary, middle, and high school students to discover and nurture outstanding local talents and provide equal educational opportunities for academic growth.

The selected scholarship recipients include ▲30 Academic Excellence Scholars (recommended by school principals) ▲4 Special Talent Scholars ▲1 Equal Opportunity Scholar from Seoul International High School ▲61 General Scholars (recommended by community service centers) ▲55 Scholars from families with three or more children ▲2 Community Service Scholars, with a total scholarship amount of 140.6 million KRW provided.

Notably, starting this year, the eligibility for the Special Talent Scholarship has been expanded to include elementary school students, allowing more students to benefit.

The Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded to students who graduate from local middle schools and enter local high schools, ranking within the top 3% of their graduating class. The Special Talent Scholarship is granted to students recommended by their school principals who have achieved a top 3 position in individual categories at nationwide or larger competitions within two years from the announcement date.

The General Scholarship is provided to children from households with income below the median level, while the scholarship for families with three or more children supports middle and high school students currently enrolled. The Community Service Scholarship is awarded to students recommended by the district head for their contributions to the local community. Recommended students are finally selected after review by the Dongdaemun-gu Scholarship Fund Management Committee.

The Dongdaemun-gu Scholarship Fund was established in December 2009 through the enactment of the “Dongdaemun-gu Scholarship Fund Establishment and Operation Ordinance” to support students facing economic difficulties who find it hard to focus on their studies. Since 2010, a total of 1,010 students have received 1.1806 billion KRW in support. This year, 153 students received 140.6 million KRW, bringing the cumulative support amount to 1.3212 billion KRW.
