This project involves constructing approximately 10 km of double-track (twin-bore) TBM tunnels, 39 emergency connection passages, and excavation of two underground station sites in the eastern section of the SRL located in the suburbs of Melbourne. GS E&C Australia will carry out the project through a joint venture with WBuild and VIG.
GS E&C Australia holds a 33.5% stake in the joint venture. Accordingly, out of the total project cost of 1.7 billion Australian dollars (1.6 trillion KRW), 570 million Australian dollars will be reflected as GS E&C’s secured contract amount.
This project is part of the SRL initiative to build a new 90 km urban rail line in Melbourne. GS E&C plans to commence construction this year and, after subsequent system works, open the line in 2035. Once completed, the entire project is expected to serve as a central axis connecting various regions of Melbourne.
Following GS E&C Australia’s initial entry into the local market with the North East Link (NEL) road project in 2021, securing another large-scale infrastructure project signifies the company’s solidified position in the Australian construction market, the company stated.
A representative of GS E&C Australia said, "This contract is significant as it expands our presence in Australia’s infrastructure construction sector. Based on the technology and execution experience GS E&C has accumulated in the global construction market, we will successfully complete the project and continue to broaden our footprint in the Australian market."
