This Year's Seoul Subway Photo Award 'Footsteps'... Capturing the Rear View of a Train Leaving the Platform

Construction Corporation Announces Results of 2024 Subway Photo Contest... 30 Final Winners Selected from 1110 Entries
Grand Prize Winner 'Baljachi' and Other Winning Works Express New Charm of Seoul Subway with Fresh Perspectives and Composition
Winning Photos to Be Exhibited in Stations from December and Used in Various Promotional Materials to Share with Citizens

This year, the photo that best captured the new charm of the Seoul subway was "Baljachi" by Seonghyun Joo.

"Baljachi" is an attractive work where the light from the tail lamp of a train, as it moves away, reflects on the tunnel, resembling footprints.

Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) announced the final 30 winning entries, including the grand prize-winning photo "Baljachi," from the "2024 Seoul Metro Subway Photo Contest."

The contest, themed "The New Charm of the Seoul Subway," was held for 19 days from October 7 to October 25.

Through the contest submission page, a total of 656 participants submitted 1,110 photos over 19 days. Afterwards, the company formed a judging panel of external experts and, after two rounds of evaluation, selected 30 winning works (1 grand prize, 2 excellence awards, 3 merit awards, and 24 encouragement awards) from 1,100 entries.

The winning works, including the grand prize "Baljachi," expressed the new charm of the Seoul subway through fresh perspectives and compositions. The 30 final winners will receive a total prize money of 8.9 million KRW and certificates, with the grand prize awarded 3 million KRW and excellence awards 1 million KRW each.

The grand prize-winning "Baljachi" captures a train departing from Euljiro 3-ga Station. As the train moves away from the station, the light from its tail lamp reflecting on the tunnel resembles the train’s footprints.

The excellence award-winning "Our 모습" depicts the ordinary daily life of waiting for a train on the platform, while another excellence award-winning work, "Train Running Under the Blue Sky," captures a train running on an elevated track against the backdrop of the sky.

The winning works will be posted on the company’s website and will be exhibited from December in frames and specific illuminated advertisements within stations. Additionally, the company plans to produce various promotional materials using the winning works to share with citizens.

Jongyeop Jung, head of public relations at Seoul Metro, said, “We appreciate the great interest and participation in this contest, which discovered the subway’s unique charm from the citizens’ perspective on the 50th anniversary of the Seoul subway’s opening. We hope the subway photo contest will continue to be an opportunity to discover new aspects of the subway through fresh perspectives and compositions.”
