Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President-elect Donald Trump, has sparked controversy by mocking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while hinting at a halt to aid for Ukraine.
According to foreign media including Newsweek and Politico EU on the 10th (local time), Trump Jr. shared a post on his Instagram featuring a gloomy-faced President Zelensky with the caption, "Your outlook: 38 days until you lose your allowance." This is interpreted as a signal that aid to Ukraine will be significantly cut or stopped once the Electoral College vote day (December 17) passes. So far, President-elect Trump has indicated his intention to reduce or stop aid to Ukraine while simultaneously increasing pressure on Russia to bring both sides to the negotiating table.
Politico EU explained that the post was a share of a post by Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and a Republican known for her blunt remarks, similar to Trump. Due to the nature of Instagram Story posts disappearing within 24 hours, the post is currently no longer viewable.
Will It Be ‘Aid Cut’ or ‘Aid Halt’?
Some have focused on the word ‘losing’ in Trump Jr.'s post, speculating that the Trump administration may be setting its sights on a complete ‘halt’ rather than just a ‘cut’ in aid to Ukraine. Politico EU noted, “Trump Jr. has doubled down on his father’s campaign promise to cut aid to Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, Trump Jr. is regarded as a key figure leading his father’s campaign this year and is expected to play a central role in the next White House administration, including in staffing decisions. It is also reported that Trump Jr. had influence in selecting Senator Mike Pence as the vice-presidential candidate.
