Introduction of Eco-Friendly Banners for Public Event Promotion
Pilot Operation Until the End of This Year, Full Implementation Next Year
Ulsan City will switch the administrative and event/festival promotional banners (banner stands) used by all city hall departments and affiliated organizations to eco-friendly materials starting January next year, and will begin a pilot operation by the end of this year.
This measure aims to practice carbon neutrality by producing public event promotional banners, which are repeatedly displayed worldwide as an important task for achieving carbon neutrality, using eco-friendly materials.
The existing banners are made of synthetic fibers containing plastic, which emit harmful substances such as dioxins during incineration or landfill, causing soil pollution.
To prevent this, they are recycled into public-use sacks, shopping bags, umbrellas, etc., but recycled products also ultimately undergo incineration or similar processes, so this is not a fundamental solution.
To solve this problem, Ulsan City plans to reduce carbon emissions by using eco-friendly materials that can be processed without emitting pollutants from the production stage of banners.
The 1,000 eco-friendly banners used annually by Ulsan City have the effect of saving 5,000 500ml water bottles, which is equivalent to the environmental protection effect of planting about 30 30-year-old pine trees.
An official from Ulsan City said, “By leading the public sector to promote the use of eco-friendly materials, we will create a pleasant urban environment and establish an eco-friendly circulation system from banner production to recycling.”
Ulsan City produced 71 eco-friendly banners for the promotion of the ‘2024 Ulsan Industrial Festival’ and traffic control guidance banners, and plans to recycle them later by making them into shopping bags and mats.
