Women Who Underwent Double Eyelid, Nose, and Liposuction Surgery
Collapsed and Died While Being Discharged
Cause of Death: Acute Respiratory Failure Due to Pulmonary Embolism
A Chinese woman died after undergoing six plastic surgeries in one day, sparking controversy.
According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 10th (local time), a woman from a rural village in Guangxi Province, China, underwent six plastic surgeries at a hospital in Nanning City on December 9, 2020.
The woman first had double eyelid and nose surgeries over five hours, followed by thigh liposuction. The next morning, she received fat grafting to her face and chest. It is reported that she took out a loan exceeding 7.83 million KRW to pay for the plastic surgeries.

However, two days later, as she was leaving the hospital and about to take the elevator, she lost consciousness and collapsed. Despite emergency measures by hospital staff, she was urgently transferred to a nearby hospital and ultimately died the same day. The autopsy revealed the cause of death as "acute respiratory failure due to pulmonary embolism following liposuction." Pulmonary embolism is a condition where the pulmonary artery is blocked, causing the lungs to malfunction. At the time, the woman had two children: an 8-year-old daughter and a son who was only 4 years old.
The bereaved family filed a lawsuit demanding damages exceeding 235.11 million KRW against the hospital. The court ruled in the first trial that the hospital should bear full responsibility, but after repeated appeals, the court in August last year held the hospital partially responsible. The family was ordered to receive 590,000 yuan, approximately 114.7 million KRW.
Investigations found that the hospital had all the legally required documents for the surgeries and that the medical staff were licensed. Also, the amount of fat removed from the woman did not exceed medical standards. The court suggested that the woman’s health condition might have contributed to her death and ruled that both the victim and the hospital share responsibility. However, the case garnered over 50 million views on social media, fueling criticism against the hospital.
Local netizens reacted with comments such as, "Six surgeries in one day? Does the hospital have no common sense? Especially, did they not consider the risks of complications from liposuction?" "This hospital has no conscience. The woman even borrowed money for the plastic surgeries. But the hospital botched the surgeries and even appealed to avoid compensation," and "Dying in pursuit of beauty is extreme."
Meanwhile, according to a 2020 survey by Chinese online market research firm iResearch Consulting, only 24% of those working in the Chinese plastic surgery industry hold legitimate licenses, and over 100,000 people operate illegally. It was also found that about 100,000 cases of disability and death occur annually due to illegal procedures.
