"Empty Contents, Remove Label, Compress and Dispose in Dedicated Collection Bin"
Intensive Promotion of Separate Disposal System in 4th Year Until December
Gwangju City announced on the 10th that it will launch an intensive publicity campaign until the end of December to raise public awareness and promote participation in the fourth year of implementing the separate collection system for transparent PET bottles.
The separate collection system for transparent PET bottles requires emptying the contents of transparent PET bottles used for water and beverages, removing the labels, compressing them, and disposing of them in designated collection bins or transparent/semi-transparent bags.
For apartment complexes, the system was first implemented on December 25, 2020, and has been expanded to include single-family homes and others since December 25, 2021. The separately collected transparent PET bottles are recycled into raw materials for new PET bottles or used as high-quality recycled materials for clothing or food containers.
The city plans to provide disposal guidelines through newsletters and electronic billboards and conduct on-site inspections to check compliance in both apartment complexes and single-family homes. Additionally, for areas where separate collection is weak, such as single-family homes and commercial districts, the city will continue to operate unmanned recycling collection machines, resource circulation stores, and neighborhood recycling centers.
Jung Mi-kyung, head of the Resource Circulation Division of Gwangju City, said, “Active participation from citizens is most important for the establishment of this system,” and added, “We ask citizens to properly separate transparent PET bottles with the mindset of disposing of resources rather than just throwing away trash.”
Meanwhile, in September, Gwangju City participated in the ‘Pilot Project for Collecting Transparent PET Bottles at Multi-use Facilities’ together with the Ministry of Environment and KIA Tigers, collecting 1.75 tons of separately disposed transparent PET bottles for water and beverages from spectators at Gwangju Kia Champions Field.
