The local governments wishing to establish new schools are ▲Goyang ▲Gwangmyeong ▲Guri ▲Gimpo ▲Siheung ▲Icheon ▲Yongin ▲Pyeongtaek ▲Hwaseong, totaling 9 regions, while those wishing to convert existing general high schools are ▲Bucheon (Bucheon High School) ▲Seongnam (Bundang Jungang High School) ▲Ansan (Seongpo High School), totaling 3 regions.

Applicants were guided to submit one application per education support office, choosing between new establishment or conversion.

The Gyeonggi-type Science High School is a regionally specialized science high school that operates an educational curriculum reflecting local characteristics. Since the announcement of the new designation plan for Gyeonggi-type Science High Schools last September, many local governments have shown interest and prepared applications.

The Provincial Office of Education appointed experts in science high school curriculum operation and school establishment as judges, who will consider feasibility of establishment and specialized curricula to determine the number of preliminary designated schools and conduct a fair evaluation according to the assessment criteria.

The results of the first phase preliminary designation will be announced at the end of November. Subsequently, through the second phase Special Purpose High School designation and operation committee and the third phase request for consent from the Minister of Education, the final designation and notification will be completed.

Hyun Gye-myeong, Director of the Convergence Education Policy Division at the Provincial Office of Education, said, “Since many local governments have shown interest in the new designation of science high schools, we will select preliminary designated schools through a fair evaluation.”
