Korean Company Achieves Breakthrough... Unveils 'World's First' Display with 50% Increased Efficiency

Increase elongation from previous maximum 20% to 50%
Allows free deformation such as stretching and folding

LG Display announced on the 10th that it has succeeded in developing a 'stretchable display' that achieves industry-leading screen elongation rates.

Earlier, on the 8th, at the 'Stretchable Display Development National Project Final Performance Sharing Meeting' held at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul, the company presented the research and development achievements of the past five years.

LG Display's stretchable display is the world's first to stretch the screen by up to 50%. It can be freely deformed in any form such as stretching, folding, or twisting, earning it the name of the ultimate Free-Form display.

The prototype unveiled this time features a 12-inch screen that stretches to 18 inches while simultaneously delivering high resolution of 100ppi (pixels per inch) at a general monitor level and full RGB (red, green, blue) color. Compared to the first prototype revealed in 2022, the maximum elongation rate has been increased more than twice, from 20% to 50%. The higher the elongation rate, the more diverse display design forms can be realized.

Additionally, it has secured durability capable of withstanding over 10,000 repeated elongations without issues, and by using micro LED light sources smaller than 40 micrometers (μm, one-millionth of a meter), it maintains clear image quality even under extreme conditions such as low and high temperatures and external shocks.

The stretchable display is not only thin and light but can also adhere to irregular curved surfaces such as clothing or skin, making it expected to be applied in various industries including fashion, wearables, and mobility.

LG Display was selected as the lead company for the national project on stretchable display development in 2020 and has been conducting joint research and development with 19 domestic industry-academia-research institutions.

Yoon Soo-young, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Display, said, "We will strive to build a sustainable future display ecosystem through close cooperation among domestic industry, academia, and research institutions."
